Spelling lists are an important part of any language arts curriculum as they assist students in learning phonics, vocabulary words, reading comprehension and fluency when reading.

Spelling Skills

First grade students are taught the basics in how to spell English words in the following way:

Consonant-Vowel-Consonant words first, such as CAT, CAR and MOM
Word Families - such as DAD, MAD and SAD or DID and HID
Blends - words that combine two letter sounds (TR, BR, FR) such as TREE, FROG or BRAVE
