Home School Online
From LoveToKnow Home School
As the homeschooling movement grows, many parents seek for ways to home school online. Programs range from a fully accredited school where the child does all of his work online to taking one subject online and everything in between.
Benefits of Doing Home School Online
For every homeschooling family, there is a different way to do home school. Many parents prefer to use a boxed curriculum, while still others would rather make up their own course of study. Still other parents appreciate and benefit from the help offered by online homeschooling programs. Choosing a curriculum is unique to each family situation. However, there are some benefits to homeschooling online if you choose to go that route.
Fear of Homeschooling
There are plenty of parents who want to homeschool but fear that they will not do a good job at the same time. Many online options are fully accredited, run by certified teachers but still allow you the flexibility of individual attention and the benefits of having your children at home. Having this extra support is relieving in this type of situation.
Kids Can Work Independently
As homeschooling grows, so do the types of people who do it. No longer is homeschooling simply for two parent families where one parent can stay home. Many single parents homeschool or are able to work while their child is homeschooling online under the supervision of a teacher.
Paperwork Made Easy
If you want to homeschool but are daunted by the amount of paperwork your state requires, there are many online options that will take care of keeping transcripts for you.
Online Options
There are numerous options for homeschooling online. Here is just a sampling of what you can do with online programs.
K12
K12 started out as the brain child of proponents of the Core Knowledge philosophy. (What Your _____ Grader Should Know series is an example of the core knowledge philosophy.) The program is known as being fairly rigorous but also flexible. Another bonus is that in some states it's free. It is definitely considered a "public school at home" option--and if that's what you're looking for you may well have found your place!
Time4Learning
Time4Learning has many options for those who want to take advantage of their services. They are not exclusively for homeschoolers, but also advertise themselves as a study option for after school, getting extra help, etc. With that said, they do offer a pretty full course load for elementary students if you want to use it exclusively.
BrainPOP
BrainPop is relatively new when it comes to homeschooling curriculum. BrainPop was devised by a doctor with the goal of making difficult concepts easy for young students. They are a subscription based service, however, there is plenty there to take advantage of for free.
Other Places to Look
Many of the major homeschool curriculum publishers, offer online options either in conjunction with or separately from their textbooks. Some examples are:
- Abeka
- Alpha and Omega
- Calvert Curriculum
Subject Specific Online Resources
There are many virtual academies, however, there also exist a few options for specific subjects that you can purchase and use online:
- Rosetta Stone offers both an "at home" version for your computer, however, they also offer options for study online.
- Aleks is a math program that is only a few years old but is getting rave reviews.
- MIT Open Courseware is for those parents who are looking for help with high school and college courses. All courses are free and there isn't instructor guidance. . .but these are real MIT courses.
Homeschooling Online Can Open Up New Worlds
Homeschooling online can help bridge the gap between what you as a parent feel like you know, and what you would need help with teaching. There are a variety of options and as technology improves, options continue to abound.
