Second Grade Printable Spelling List
From LoveToKnow Home School
A second grade printable spelling list is a helpful tool for the homeschool classroom. Word lists can be used to design quizzes, puzzles and other English language assignments. A second grade spelling curriculum should incorporate compound words, Dolch words and progressively advanced phonics.
Second Grade Spelling Skills
There are specific skills associated with learning the English language. The types of words people learn, and the order in which they are presented, help them acquire more advanced skills.
- Dolch Words – these words are also known as "sight words." There are 220 words that children should learn to achieve fluency in reading the English language. The list of these common words was first published by Edward William Dolch, PhD in 1948.
- Compound Words - a combination of two words, such as BEDROOM, SAILBOAT and GRANDPARENT
- Phonics – children learn how to pronounce or decode more difficult words in each successive year of school. In second grade, students will learn short-vowel and long-vowel words. In addition they will learn r- controlled and consonant-blend patterned words.
